Today I want to do a product review of the GreenFiber brand of Cellulose Insulation. I will discuss the Quality, Value and Installation of GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation. You can find GreenFiber at HOME DEPOT.
I have installed this brand of insulation in a few different properties including my own home. I have also installed other brands of insulation and I plan to give the facts of GreenFiber and compare the GreenFiber to the other brands that I have installed.
- GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation Quality
R Value – R11 to R60
Insulation Locations – 2×4 or 2×6 Walls, Attics and Floors (Basically Anywhere)
Insulation Features – Fire Block, Soundproofing, Formaldehyde Free, Loose or Dense Pack
Overview – Overall, I would say the GreenFiber brand of cellulose insulation is a great product. As you can see above this product can be used almost anywhere. It has a great R Value at R4 per inch of Dense Pack and 3.5 per inch as loose fill.
It is not perfect though; this stuff can get extremely messy. We just insulated the walls of our home with this, you can read the “How To” article next week. We had to insulate the walls from the inside since we own a brick home. In a non-brick home, you can drill holes from the outside and it is less messy this way.
They do make a “LOW DUST” cellulose insulation that will help your home stay cleaner. The low dust product does cost a little more and is not carried in most Home Depots, so you would have to order it. They usually offer free shipping on this product so just make sure you order in advance.
- GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation Value
GreenFiber costs less per bag then the Owens Corning AttiCat PINK Expanding Fiberglass Insulation. You can Read my Review on Owens Corning AttiCat by clicking the link. Owens Corning claims they get better coverage per back, and they do, but the R Value is lower, and it costs more per bag.
Insulating your home will pay for the investment and more over time. Make sure you don’t plan to move for a couple years after you insulate to be able to get your money back. You will save money on your heating and cooling costs all year long.
- Installation
Skill Level – Intermediate
Time – Up to 1 Day (Depending on Application type and Size of Project)
Installing GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation is quite easy for attic locations, but there will be some skill required to insulating walls since you have to find all the studs drill holes between them.
All loose fill “Blow-in” types of insulation are very similar to install and are for the most part quite simple. In attic locations make sure you are careful if you do not have floors installed, you don’t want to end up falling through the ceiling.
You will need to wear protective gear like, Dust Masks, Goggles, and Gloves. I also like to wear long sleeves even in the summer.
You can buy GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation at your local Home Depot, you can also order online (by clicking one of the links here) and pick up in store (where available) or they will ship this product for free. They will get it ready for you, when you show up you will go to the pick-up desk and it will be waiting for you. You don’t have to waste anytime looking through the store.
I hope you have found this information helpful. Leave me a comment and let me know if you have used GreenFiber Cellulose Insulation and what you think of it. My home is warmer already!
