Did you know that your washing machine needs to be cleaned? Yes, that’s right, something that cleans needs cleaned.
Recently I had to make a repair to my washing machine. It didn’t drain the water out and when I tried to restart it, it would just hum then shut off. It turns out that there was a sock stuck in the water pump. I have a step by step article on “How to Fix Your Washing Machine” that goes over how to make this repair.
When I took the cover off the washing machine I seen how dirty the washing drum was and I knew I needed to clean it. Here is how I did it.
- Unplug the washing machine
- Unscrew the top control panel
- Flip control panel over back of washing machine
- Unplug the lid switch
- Take off the back brackets
- Pull entire washer surround off
Put one hand on the lid and one hand on the front of the top. You will need to pull towards you to get the bottom lip out from under the frame of the washing machine. Then pull it straight towards you while lifting up.
- Unhook latches holding top tub ring on and lift ring off
Push down and then lift tab out of the way. Do this for the tabs all the way around the tub ring. Lift it up and out of the way. Scrub the tub ring with nonabrasive scouring pad.
- Scrub the inside and top of washing machine
- Scrub the Tub
I did this with bleach and hot water mixture and I used a nonabrasive scouring pad. The scouring pad worked good for me because it was thin enough to reach down into the space between the drum and tub. Be careful not to get scratched or cut and you should wear gloves.
- Reassemble the washing machine
Follow Steps 1-7 in reverse order to reassemble the washing machine.
- Run a cycle
You will want to run a cycle with bleach. I set my machine to the largest load size and hot water. I also used the extra rinse cycle to make sure everything was washed out completely.
I also took the washing machine apart again so I could get the clean “After” Picture. That is not necessary for you to do.
This method is a little involved, but it will clean it better then any other method you will find. We have tried the vinegar cycles and bleach cycles not that long ago and the washing machine was still dirty. Nothing beats a little elbow grease.
